Carbon Sink (2019)

This series focuses on the impact of the extraction of peatlands in Ireland. Peatlands have stored carbon underground for thousands of years. When the peat is cut away this carbon is released. One hectare of drained bog emits six tonnes of carbon dioxide per year for each year that it remains dry. Raising the water table of degraded peatlands must be carried out if their carbon storage functions are to resume again. The images in this series focus on both areas of extraction and reflooding. Not intending to apply judgment to the extraction of peatlands, this series looks at the nuances involved in this historical practice, and what measures are being taken moving forward.
